Pizhichil combines a continuous flow of warm medicated oil with gentle synchronised massage. Discover how this classical Kerala therapy works, the conditions it is used for, what a session feels like and how to get the most from a course.

Among all Kerala Ayurveda treatments, few are as luxurious, or as therapeutically powerful, as Pizhichil. Historically reserved for royalty, it is often called Rajakeeya Chikitsa, the "royal treatment". Today, at Greenwich Ayurveda Hospital, Kottakkal, it is a cornerstone of our programmes for joint pain, neurological recovery and rejuvenation.

What Is Pizhichil?

The name comes from the Malayalam word pizhiyuka, meaning "to squeeze". During the therapy, therapists dip pieces of cloth into warm medicated oil and squeeze the oil in a continuous, even stream over the body, while gently and rhythmically massaging it in.

In classical terms, Pizhichil combines two therapies:

  • Snehana (oleation): deep nourishment of the tissues with medicated oil
  • Swedana (sudation): gentle, sustained warmth that opens the channels

Because of this combination, it is sometimes described as an "oil bath".

How Is Pizhichil Performed?

  1. Consultation: The physician selects the medicated oil, such as Ksheerabala, Dhanwantharam or Mahanarayana oil, based on your condition.
  2. Head oil: A small amount of oil is applied to the scalp, and the head is protected to keep it cool.
  3. Positioning: You lie on a traditional wooden treatment table called a droni.
  4. The pour: Two or four therapists work in synchronised rhythm, pouring warm oil from a height while massaging gently. The oil is continually rewarmed to keep a constant, comfortable temperature.
  5. Positions: The therapy is usually done in seven positions, covering the whole body.
  6. Rest and bath: After 45 to 60 minutes, excess oil is wiped away, you rest briefly, and then have a warm herbal bath.

Benefits of Pizhichil

Pizhichil is a classic Vata-pacifying therapy. It is traditionally used to:

  • Relieve joint pain, stiffness and muscle spasms
  • Nourish and strengthen muscles and nerves
  • Support recovery from paralysis and weakness
  • Improve circulation and flexibility
  • Deeply relax the nervous system and improve sleep
  • Rejuvenate the skin and the body as a whole

Conditions Commonly Treated with Pizhichil

What Does Pizhichil Feel Like?

Most people describe it as one of the most deeply relaxing experiences of their lives: warm oil flowing continuously, gentle synchronised hands and a quiet room. Many patients drift into a light sleep. Afterwards you may feel heavy, calm and pleasantly tired, which is a sign that the nervous system is settling.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

Pizhichil is traditionally given as a course of 7, 14 or 21 days. For chronic and neurological conditions, it is usually combined with other treatments such as Njavarakizhi, Vasti and internal medicines.

Who Should Avoid Pizhichil?

Pizhichil is not suitable for everyone, which is why a physician’s assessment is essential. It is usually avoided or postponed in:

  • Fever, acute infections and indigestion
  • Severe obesity or high Kapha conditions with heaviness
  • Some uncontrolled heart conditions
  • Pregnancy, unless specifically advised

Aftercare Tips

  1. Rest after the therapy and avoid strenuous activity.
  2. Bathe in warm water; avoid cold showers.
  3. Avoid cold drinks, cold wind and air conditioning blowing directly on you.
  4. Eat a light, warm meal.
  5. Sleep early and avoid screens late at night.

Why Pizhichil Needs an Experienced Team

The effectiveness of Pizhichil depends on details: the right oil, a precise and constant temperature, synchronised rhythm, and a clean, quiet setting. At Greenwich Ayurveda, our Pizhichil therapy is delivered by trained Kerala therapists under daily physician supervision.
