Ayurveda has eight classical branches. One of them, Rasayana, is devoted entirely to rejuvenation: keeping the body and mind strong, resilient and youthful for as long as possible. It is not simply "anti-ageing" in the cosmetic sense. Classical texts describe Rasayana as promoting longevity, memory, intelligence, immunity, a healthy complexion and vigour.
At Greenwich Ayurveda Hospital, Kottakkal, our Rasayana Chikitsa programmes are designed for people who want to restore energy, recover from illness or stress, and age well.
What Does "Rasayana" Mean?
The word combines Rasa, the first tissue that nourishes all others (and the essence of nutrition), and Ayana, meaning path or circulation. Rasayana therefore means the path by which nourishment reaches every tissue. When this flow is strong, every tissue from plasma to nerve to reproductive tissue (the seven Dhatus) is well nourished, and the body resists disease and decline.
Why Cleansing Comes First
Ayurveda compares Rasayana to dyeing cloth: dye does not take well on dirty cloth. Similarly, rejuvenative medicines work best on a body that has first been cleansed. This is why a Rasayana programme often begins with a gentle form of Panchakarma, or at least with treatments to improve digestion and clear Ama.
The Three Pillars of Rasayana
1. Aushadha Rasayana: rejuvenative herbs and formulations
Classical Rasayana herbs and preparations include:
- Amalaki (Indian gooseberry): rich in natural antioxidants, the base of Chyawanprash.
- Ashwagandha: traditionally used for strength, stamina, stress and sleep.
- Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia): traditionally valued for immunity.
- Brahmi and Shankhapushpi: traditionally used for memory, focus and calm (Medhya Rasayana).
- Shatavari: traditionally used for nourishment and women’s health.
- Chyawanprash and Brahma Rasayana: classical compound formulations.
These must be chosen and dosed according to your constitution, digestion and health. More is not better, and the wrong herb can aggravate an imbalance.
2. Ahara Rasayana: rejuvenating food
Ayurveda considers some foods rejuvenating in themselves when taken correctly: fresh cow’s milk, ghee, honey (never heated), seasonal fruits, almonds soaked overnight, and freshly cooked whole grains and lentils. Above all, food must be fresh, warm and well digested.
3. Achara Rasayana: rejuvenating conduct
Perhaps the most overlooked pillar. Classical texts describe truthfulness, kindness, calmness, moderation, respect for elders, regular sleep and avoiding anger and excess as Rasayana in themselves. Modern research on stress, sleep and longevity echoes this ancient insight.
